Authors have studied the question of innovative potential role for the Russian Federation defense industry enterprises. The actions carried out by the government for the development of the defense industry innovative potential are defined. The essence analysis of the definitions "potential", "innovation" and "innovative potential" is carried out. Criteria which "innovation" for the purpose of application in production has to possess are allocated. The concept of the defense industry innovative potential which components will allow to characterize current state, threats and prospects of further development is offered.
